I really never got around to watching 'Planet Earth' or 'March of the Penguins', or any of these other nature movies and series. I did however get the chance to go see the Red Carpet premiere in Los Angeles(apparently there were some celebrities there too, but I didn't happen to see anyone I recognized other then some actresses who I think I've seen on Disney Channel, but I don't know their names) Anyway, onto the movie 'Earth'. It was a very nicely done film that, as the commercials state, follows 3 families. There are also some quick run throughs of some other animals in their natural habitats. Something important, this film is definitely kiddy friendly, don't believe the reviews saying it's a depressing gore fest. They obviously show a little blood and some intense chases and fights, but they always cut away and don't actually away eating on any animals. James Earl Jones did a terrific job narrating the movie, even though a few jokes in the dialogue fell completely flat Thanks

This movie is perfect. That might not be obvious in the first few minutes, but it is an example of the very best filmmaking and storytelling. With eloquent simplicity it tells the story of life, without preaching or harshness. The difficulty of nature on our planet, and its importance, is shown in beautifully filmed segments, and while the ordeals faced by our animal co-residents is clear, 'earth' neither glosses over, nor does it over dramatize [or traumatize] life's realities. Those cursed with short attention spans might think this movie bland. They are truly, and sadly, missing the point: the magnificence of the film, and of those with whom we SHARE this planet. For whom WE are responsible. We humans are the stewards of this planet, and it really is up to us to use our powers for good. This movie should empower you to realize the value of the extraordinary, wonderful, precious, and vulnerable creatures with whom we live.

I took my 8 year old granddaughter who shares the love of animals with me. The photography was spectacular, actually breathtaking. Unfortunately, I did not like the preditor scenes. We ALL know that carnivorous animals hunt their prey BUT did they have to keep putting these scenes in the movie? It got to the point where it got upsetting-which little creature would be hunted next kept going through our minds.Although the actually tearing of skin was not explecit (up to the part of the movie that we stayed for), the game of chase the weaker animal was NOT entertaining to us. In fact, by the time a baby elephant was subject to attack, we decided to leave. Disney might say that this is what really happens so it needed to be in the film, well, rerate the movie to aat least a PG rating.

fantastic cinematography- great aerial shots of terrain and migrating animals. it was like a bigger version of a national geographic special. HOWEVER, my young children were a bit traumatized by the suffering of the animals. there was several scenes of natural killing by predator that was done with much emotion evoking music, the lions attacking the baby elephant was gruesome- but it was the starving of the daddy polar bear that made my 8 year old cry and we finally had to leave early. suggest bracing young children for the realities of natural order, as well as a long talk about how we are helping the environment by conservation, etc. so there is hope for the polar bear if we can address global warming. all sad but all true- so a thought provoking and beautifully filmed movie but not a good pick for little guys.
