Storyline:
Entrepreneurs Ben, a peaceful and charitable marijuana producer, and friend Chon, a former Navy SEAL, run a lucrative, homegrown industry - raising some of the best weed ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with Ophelia. Life is idyllic in their Southern California town... until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena and her enforcer, Lado, underestimate the unbreakable bond of the three friends, Ben and Chon - with the reluctant assistance of a dirty DEA agent - wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.

An all star cast and a legendary director phone it in for an adaptation that holds no interest. Stone's trademark cinematography is the only thing that shines, with the exception of one (and only one) well delivered line from John Travolta, and while those elements might be worth the price of admission, they are certainly not worth the time.
The story is topical and I imagine it is a readable book. But when brought to life I could not care less about these characters, even when they are graphically brought to death on screen.
I love Oliver Stone, but not for this.

Waaay to much graphic violence for me. Acting was only fair vs great. But then, maybe it'll make people think twice before getting into the drug business.

I have to say I was excited to see this movie but within the first 15 minutes, I knew I was going to be disappointed. Other than the glorious 90 seconds of Taylor Kitsch's ass...this movie was so not worth it. The acting was terrible on Blake Lively's part and John Travolta looked revolting in every scene he was in. Do yourself a favor and wait to rent this on Redbox for $1.20 and watch it in the privacy of your own home so you can yell at the screen about how crappy the acting was!

After 2 earlier movies that were considered so-so, Stone excelled himself with Savages.... The story quite realistic, the actors very good... more focus on the story development by the actors themselves - less the grandstanding.

When watching the movie, I felt like Oliver Stone was trying to go back in time and bring back the feel he had in "Natural Born Killers". I personally felt like it fell short. The dynamics between the 3 main characters gave it a little depth, but not much. About half way through most people will figure out what might happen. Blake Lively and John Travolta did not add much value to the movie at all. Bencio did a pretty good job, but it might be too little to late, I am not sure people will be knocking down his door to get him in movies again, though he pretty much saved this one in my eyes. This is not a bad movie, but unless you are a die hard Oliver Stone fan, you can probably wait until this one comes out at the Redbox.
It is pretty violent, so I would not suggest taking your children.
