Storyline:
In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.

Powerful film. Love that a message of determination, identity, strength, and major loss could be depicted in a short, cartoon, manner. Very different from most cartoon movies where the heroine locates her identity after meeting a male. This film depicts a "truer" sense of teenage/young adult romantic relationships while teaching some fun skills (including a MAJOR reason why learning anger management skills is important...). What made the film even more enjoyable is that the main character, Marjane, is able to go through all of this emotional turmoil while keeping her sense of humor and learning what it really means to be "true to herself."

Persepolis is an animated French film about a girl's life in Iran (and France) during the upheaval of government and war. It starts with the overthrow of the dictatorship and how her and her families' lives are affected by the war/aftermath that follows. It is an excellent movie in topic and style. There is a wonderful sense of humor in it that makes a movie of this somber topic very enjoyable. It is all in French and subtitled in English. I have seen only a few French/subtitled movies, but if you enjoyed Amelie with Audrey Tatou ([BLOCKED WEBSITE] and you are interested in the history of our time, you will surely love this film. 5/5 stars!

Powerful, nuanced political/cultural message. Deeply moving.

Engaging story of a spirited girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. We see a country going through violent suppression through the eyes of a girl whose parents know that, while her spirit may survive such suppression, she would not. The movie affirms that we in free societies may tend to take freedom for granted, and this reminds us not to. Simple but beautiful animation takes us intimately into the girl's mind, making this a very sympathic experience. Very funny, very sad, and instructive about contemporary Iranian history. In French with subtitles.

This movie was great. It lost a little in the translation from the graphic novel, but this is a common situation with books that are made into movies. Overall, the main ideas, feelings and themes were captures in a meaningful way. I loved the animation style and loved the story of this young girls life and experience in claiming and becoming who she it. Everyone should see this movie to understand more about Iran.
