In this modern-day romantic tale, Penelope is about a young girl's inspiring journey, a mysterious family secret, and the power of love. With all odds against her, in order for Penelope to break the family curse, she must find true love with "one of her own kind" and realize the most important life lesson, "I like myself the way I am." Penelope Wilhern, born to wealthy socialites, is afflicted by the Wilhern spell that can only be broken when she finds love. Hidden away in her family's estate, the lonely girl meets a string of suitors in her parents' futile attempt to break the curse. Each eligible bachelor is enamored with Penelope and her sizable dowry; until her curse is revealed. Lemon, a mischievous and eager tabloid reporter, wants a photograph of the mysterious Penelope and hires Max to pose as a prospective suitor to get the shot. If you're looking for cinematic genius, this isn't it. But you could tell that by the trailer. This film is cute for the kids. It gives the good message to be happy with who you are and that you don't need to change to matter to other people. It's just like the fairy-tales, there's always a moral at the end. Ricci's Penelope was lovable and even James McAvoy's rugged Max was magnetic at times. This is a film about loving yourself, even when the world may think you're a little weird, but then again, who isn't? Take the kids, the whole family will enjoy it. Plus, how many PG movies that both kids and parents will like have been in theaters recently?

This was a cute movie -a less "hollywood" fairytale along the same lines as Enchanted- with an even better message. Took my children (boys) 6 & 7, (girl) 11 and we all enjoyed it. Good acting and I couldn't take my eyes off James McAvoy. This guy will be big. Good, lighthearded movie. Catch it at a matinee with the whole family

Once again I must disagree with the reviews from critics I've read so far. I thought this show was amazing. I would have watched it again the moments the credits rolled if I were able and I'll definitely be purchasing my copy when it comes out on DVD. To be fair, the reviews I read didn't say it was a horrible movie but they certainly were shouting the praises this gem deserved, unfortunately. It seems these days if a movie isn't a total mind bender or out of this world special effects that leave you drooling, then it's not worth praise which is terribly sad I think. This movie was all kinds of sweet and wonderful. I highly recommend it. Five stars and two thumbs up all the way.

Based on an advance screening: This was produced by Reese Witherspoon, who plays a small role in it as best friend to 'Penelope' (Christina Ricci). Filmed in 2006, it was held (for various possible reasons) and is being released now possibly because of the high visibility of co-star James McAvoy (from 'Atonement') who plays a down-on-his-luck gambler trying to court Penelope in order to get money from a paparazzi reporter who wants photos. Penelope needs a best friend because she has been cursed with cosmetically-unrepairable features such as a pig-like nose (due to improper class-conscious actions of her father's ancestor). Her mother (Catherine O'Hara) works hard to get her married off to a rich suitor, believing a kiss from such a person will restore Penelope's looks to normal. But, when the efforts fail, Penelope runs away from home to try to build her own life. The film is a generally pleasant humorous fantasy, but somewhat weak in its writing and development. 2.5* of 4.
