A recent foreign film enthusiast, as I tended to shy away from films dominated by subtitles, I had the pleasure of watching this Danish flick last month. My immediate, and now seasoned, reaction? Wow! Although the cinematic direction leaves something to be desired in terms of craft and depth (note this is Zandvliet's directorial debut), Steen's performance undoubtedly steals the spotlight - literally, she's virtually in every frame of the film. More importantly, Steen's struggle with two separate, yet mirroring identities (one on-stage and the other off-stage) is fixedly intriguing and unapologetically raw, as Zandvliet captures Steen's facial expressions so closely that her pores form the screen's landscape in many scenes. She is simply superb in this film and much 'applause' is owed to her merit - in a real world, in the form of a Best Actress Oscar nod.
