Storyline:
A story of friendship, a retrospective, and a look at haute couture as business: we watch Valentino Garavani (1932- ) and partner Giancarlo Giammetti from preparation for the 2006 Spring/Summer Collection in Paris to a July 2007 retrospective of Valentino's 45-year career, which included dressing Jacqueline Kennedy. The film documents a year of work, shows, business changes, and decisions. We follow a creation from sketch to runway: he's always in pursuit of beauty. We're in Paris, Rome, and Venice. He receives the French Legion of Honor medal; his acceptance speech brings tears. Reporters ask when he'll retire. Is the Roman retrospective his career's finale? Cue Puccini.

Fans and non fans alike will love getting a close up into the world of Valentino. A true artistic genius and the very last of his kind.

More complex and moving than any Hollywood tripe, Valentino was riveting from start to finish. A glimpse into a rarified world that will never come again. Most satisfying film experience I've had in quite some time.

Anytime I leave a movie and I start discussing it in great detail with whomever accompanied me, it's probably a GOOD thing. If a film can move you and trigger emotional hotspots, the director usually did a fantastic job. The fact that I attended with someone who has never even heard of Valentino and finds him respectable tells me that this film was well done. We argued about the role of ego and the "supporting" actor Giancarlo Giametti and how someone can be THAT supportive for 45+ years. I am in the fashion industry and have worked with various designers with less than tolerable demeanors and this exemplified the difficulty in working with someone as talented and sought after as Valentino. I admire Valentino's courage to make his life public because he iincluded both the glamorous parts as well as the less than glamorous side of the industry. It's about people and relationships and no matter how high you get, you need the support of family, friends and colleagues to keep you happy.

For the fans of high fashion and haute couture, this is a good documentary that follows the ins and outs of a company and its designer and the inevitable of change. I think it was a good documentary following the last year or so of Valentino's career. It gave you a glimpse of what his world was like and a short glimpse of what he is like.

If you forget about the world of fashion for a moment, this is really a film about an extraordinary relationship between the two main characters. It's a very touching story. You really don't need to know or care anything about fashion to enjoy this. It's funny, heartwarming, and a good lesson for all of us.
