Shortly thereafter they become parents of a boy, who they initially name Gogol, and a few years later both give birth to Sonia. The family then buy their own house in the suburbs and travel to India for the first time after their marriage. The second time they travel to India is when Gogol and Sonia are in their late teens, and after a memorable visit to Kolkata and then to the Taj Mahal, they return home. This movie makes you think and touches every chord of your body. The emptiness that surrounds you and the hardship that an immigrant goes through.

I thought the movie was ver well done plot wise, visually and accousticly. The characters were real and each well developed with their own slue of mistakes along the way. They were not polished and thuse you as the viewer could really connect with many aspects of their struggle. The movie covered a lot more stories then I expected and was a bit longwinded but still would recommend it.

Mira Nair has done an absolutely fantastic job of illustrating the cultural issues faced by an Indian family which is trying to assimilate into the American culture. The story revolves around an Indian guy, Gogol, who is born and bought up in US. Gogol understands his 'namesake' after some sorry events. Overall a very good emotional movie.

FilmEnthusiast

I often go to see new releases, but it is infrequent that the films I see stay with me days and weeks after the viewing. The experiences of the Ganguli family ring true for immigrants of all courtiers. The film depicts the cultural gaps between parents and their American-born children. As the years go by, the children become aware of the sacrifices their parents made and gain an appreciation for the people and the country from which they stem.
