Storyline:
In northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

I saw Australia last week at a private showing and it was amazing!!! It had all of the components I think that a truly good movie should contain. It had romance, suspense, action, sadness and happiness. It is a must see movie!

Tonight I was privileged to attend the advance press screening of this sweeping epic by Baz Lurhmann.
This is a VERY long movie - 2hrs 45mins...
Above average performances by the two main stars - Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman - the chemistry between Nicole and Hugh SIZZLED!!! And the totally commendable supporting cast(Bryan Brown, David Wenham - as a VILE CONNIVING MANIPULATIVE BACK-STABBING DOUBLE-CROSSING LYING LOW-CLASS SCUM, Brandon Walters, etc.) helped to elevate this stylishly gorgeous movie beyond the ordinary.
Great cinematography - excellent direction - average editing - but oh the Australian outback vistas were breathtaking! I truly love the scenery!
Could the movie be shortened and the plot tightened?
Of course! But then we would lose out on Baz's commendable work!
Major themes: Love, loyalty/family, sacrifice, honor, RACISM, etc.
VERDICT:
Highly recommended.
Family and kids friendly.
Just be advised that it is 165 minutes or 2 hrs 45mins long...

This is Grand Cinema to the scale we rarely see these days.
A comparison with the scope and depth of Gone With The Wind comes to mind.
Beautifully crafted and engaging.

"Australia" the movie is the Australian "Gone with the Wind," a sweeping historical epic with a great love story in the foreground. The chemistry between Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman was palpable. It is longer than the average flick but that just means you get your money's worth. Great story, beautifully filmed. Don't miss it.
