Storyline:
It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear-based discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James, a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequences.

Meryl Streep was absolutely incredible in her dead-on Catholic school nun with yardsticks for hands. She brilliantly balanced a cold, dogmatic persona with snippets of compassion, in her spoken and body language (so the script was good too). Phillip Seymour Hoffman, another stellar performance. But the best performance of the film, to me, was the 10 minutes or so that Viola Davis got on the screen to wow us. Unbelievable. Intense. Profound. Happy. Sad. Amy Adams was very good, as well. The film was expertly cast, period.
Just a beautiful film. Jarring. Go see it.

I just attended and invite only preview of this movie. I must say that it was the best movie I have seen this year. Streep and Hoffman gave oscar worthy prefromances. This movie takes place in 1964 Brooklyn about a year after the Kennedy Assasanation. When you go to see this film take people who have opinions and can follow the characters and likes to discus. After this movie the near by resturants were full of viewers discussing this film. Amy Adams is also worthy of a oscar nomination as best supporting actress. This movie will keep you totally involved until its very ending. If your looking for Action and Adventure you need to go to another movie. This Film is total drama seasoned with good humor. If you ever attended Catholic schooling you need to see this film. This film is appropreately titled you will leave it with Doubt. But trust me you will be thrust into the lives of these characters and they will definately make you think and reflect the powerful message this film gives

If you love brilliant writing, then you'll love this film. The acting is up to par with everything else entailed. However, I hope you don't expect action in any sense, because it doesn't have it. All in all, I loved the film and I wouldn't be surprised if it wins best screenplay when it comes down to it. On a side note, the writer/director also did "Joe Verses the Volcano"... his one and only other film he directed besides "Doubt" (not wrote). His reasoning behind it was that he grew quickly tired of the Executives breathing down his neck. Can't blame the guy. However a wonderful reappearance to the scene of direction.

This is one of the finest movies of the year. Streep will clearly get the Oscar nod and SHOULD win. Hoffman was good; it's not an Oscar roll, however. I saw the movie with a Nun, and she explained all the nuances and changes to the Roman Catholic law and their Nuns. VERY little has changed, so it makes Streep's roll more important than ever. We talked about it for an HOUR afterwards.

EXCELLENT movie. Returned me to the past when I was being tutored (whacked in the back of the head) by the Dominican Sisters,(This movie has Sisters of Charity), both orders are out of the same mold. Ms. Streep was SUPER as the Mother Superior, pardon the pun. Hoffman too was great at portraying a priest, Fr. Flynn, looking to bring his flock into a more modern and understanding Church/Religion. The kids in the movie looked like they were plucked out of the Fifties. I can truly believe that Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) kept the poor kids transistor radio. See it, you'll like it.
