It's difficult to imagine how much humanity can be portrayed in a documentary about a circus strongman without a circus. Stanless Steel is an iron monger in central New Jersey & also the world's strongest man at bending steel. He struggles with how to turn this title into a career, or at least something more than a kid's party act, as his strength, resolve, and personal relationships all seem to falter at the same time. The film is extremely personal, showing Stan, his girlfriend, Barb, and his family in their unguarded, often depressing, lives. In spite of this raw up-close footage, sometimes too close for comfort, there is a real beauty to much of the film that comes from the cinematography and director Levy's meticulous editing, and from the subjects who show themselves to be loving, generous, and funny in spite of their insecurities, failures, and emotional and financial problems. The real tale is a surprising one of human nature, resolve, weakness, and the limits we all face.
