Storyline:
On the lonely roads of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, two men forge an improbable friendship that will change both of their lives forever. Solo is a Senegalese cab driver working to provide a better life for his young family. William is a tough Southern good ol' boy with a lifetime of regrets. One man's American dream is just beginning, while the other's is quickly winding down. But despite their differences, both men soon realize they need each other more than either is willing to admit. Through this unlikely but unforgettable friendship, GOODBYE SOLO deftly explores the passing of a generation as well as the rapidly changing face of America.

Somewhere between a go and a must go. Nothing flashy here. If that's a complement, then see it.

Goodbye Solo is gripping in every sense of the word--emotionally, spiritually, physically. As the movie drew to its close I actually did not take a breath. A powerful tribute to individuality and contrast.

"Goodbye Solo" is real and true filmmaking at its finest. It is shot simply and unpretentiously, with an elegance that seems not only unaware of itself, but disinterested in the very concepts of accolade or recognition. Some independent filmmakers strive for a raw, uber-realistic, "real people living real life" observant style of moviemaking, but few seem to really hit the fine and elusive note that floats somewhere between intentionally nonchalant and cinematically compelling. Yes: "real people, real life, shot simply" can be inherently powerful...but only when the people and their trials are captivating and worthwhile. If I wanted "real" without a purpose, I'd watch Andy Warfhol's "Sleep". Rahmin Bahrani's "Goodbye Solo" strikes that balance, just beautifully. Two main characters, a handful of supporting characters...and I found myself touched and enthralled by a little movie that is so very simple, and tragic, and beautiful, on so many levels. See it. You'll love it.
