Are you sure, you want to add Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
to your wish list?
Storyline:
Fueled by a raging libido, Wild Turkey, and superhuman doses of drugs, Thompson was a true "free lance, " goring sacred cows with impunity, hilarity, and a steel-eyed conviction for writing wrongs. Focusing on the good doctor's heyday, 1965 to 1975, the film includes clips of never-before-seen (nor heard) home movies, audiotapes, and passages from unpublished manuscripts.

Hunter was an interesting man and lived in an interesting time in American history. I don't want to know about the depths of his self-indulgence -- I just want to appreciate his writing and insights for what they are. This documentary left me thinking Hunter is not someone I'd want to know; he was an intellectual elitist. I wanted to hear more from his friends and colleagues about the person he was, and not just the drunken and stoned stunts he pulled. Maybe that was the person he was...
This documentary could easily have been edited down 30 minutes.

It was the usual unusual about the bizarre, creative character that was Hunter S Thompson. I enjoy Biographical movies. His are always enjoyable and entertaining. It was well done.

This is a periodically in-depth documentary look at the life and times of influential hippy-ish writer Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, with a lot of items read by JOHNNY DEPP (who also appears in scenes from the movie made of Thompson’s book “Fear & Loathing In Las Vegasâ€). There are a lot of interviews and comments by Thompson himself, along with those of friends (such as Rolling Stone publisher JANN WENNER and his co-workers), family members (his 2 ex-wives and his son), etc. There are some fascinating tidbits -- his thoughts on the open use of various drugs, his hate of politicians such as Richard Nixon & Hubert Humphrey, his influential promotion of the candidacies of people like George McGovern, & so on. As Wenner comments on the disappointing end to Thompson’s life, he had a lot more he could have “given†(seemingly referring to possible weight he could’ve provided to coverage on the missteps of Emperor George the Inept). Overall, I found the film often interesting, tho nothing great.

Great documentary on Hunter S. Thompson. A little longer than I expected (close to 2 1/2 hours) but there was so much about the man's life that was interesting it could have lasted 12 hours. Definitely worth seeing. And worth considering what a man like Thompson would be saying about the current presidential race.
