Storyline:
London based hit men Ray and Ken are told by their boss Harry Waters to lie low in Bruges, Belgium for up to two weeks following their latest hit, which resulted in the death of an innocent bystander. Harry will be in touch with further instructions. While they wait for Harry's call, Ken, following Harry's advice, takes in the sights of the medieval city with great appreciation. But the charms of Bruges are lost on the simpler Ray, who is already despondent over the innocent death, especially as it was his first job. Things change for Ray when he meets Chloe, part of a film crew shooting a movie starring an American dwarf named Jimmy. When Harry's instructions arrive, Ken, for whom the job is directed, isn't sure if he can carry out the new job, especially as he has gained a new appreciation of life from his stay in the fairytale Bruges. It's odd to find yourself empathizing with murderers, even rooting for them. But the clever writing and masterful acting do the trick in this sometimes bloody, often funny film. Colin Farrell is wonderful as a neophyte hit man who botches his first job by accidentally offing not only the intended target of his hit but an innocent bystander, a little boy. He spends the rest of the film being racked with grief...while he's not trying to bed some foxy lady. There's some pretty graphic blood, but it's not gratuitous. There are lots of funny situations and some moments of true hilarity that relieve the tension. Bottom line: it's a very fine piece of cinema with 3 very accomplished actors and a good supporting cast. And you'll probably decide that a trip to Bruges wouldn't be a half bad idea.

I wasn't expecting much when I sat down to watch this little film I'd never even heard of. Of course I should have known better because some of the best movies these days are the little films no one ever hears of so unfortunately never get to see. "In Bruges" is a perfect example of this. It turned out to be one of the best (and surprisingly funniest) movies I saw all year. Brendan Gleason and Colin Farrell give great performances and create an entertaining odd couple chemistry between them. But Ralph Fiennes comes in halfway through the story and does what he does best; stealing the show by creating another unforgettable and truely enjoyable villian. "In Bruges" doesn't reinvent the wheel or break any new ground in film making, it's simply one of the most entertaining movies I saw all year.

this is one of the best movies i have seen in a long time. collin farrell was outstanding. the movie was sharp, quick witted, soulful. it was dark however hilariously realistic at times. loved the "you're an elephant" and "leave it fatty" lines.

Jason Bourne meets National Lampoon European Vacation. Two Irish hit men get sent to somewhat obscure European tourist center on enforced vacation. What can go wrong does go wrong as they try to cool down in a midevil town at Christmas. Like all of us visiting a European destination, one of the pair feels compelled to visit the cultural sites while the other wants beer. They get in confrontations with boorish American and Canadian toursits in no time. It's a comedy and suspense film somewhat reminiscent of Pulp Fiction, but with a European flavor. Why is it so funny seeing two vicious killers about to pull guns while sipping beer at a tourist cafe in the center of town? Why is it so funny when the obseqious museum ticket taker gets hammered? Why is it funny when an obnoxious tourist is pounded for complaining about smoke in the smoking section? We've been there and felt the frustration. Here we get to follow along behind two gangsters as they struggle through touristic hell.
