Alfred Hitchcock took many chances with his 1948 one-set thriller ROPE. It was an Americanized version of a Patrick Hamilton play called "Rope's End" and was loosely based on the infamous Leopold/Loeb "kill for thrill" murder case of the 20s. (Hitch regarded it as one of his favorite plays.) It dealt heavily with homosexual themes and Nitchze philosophy and was filmed all in 10 minute takes to give the movie the sense of "real time". What transpired was nothing short of fascinating as James Stewart shows up as a retired head master during a swanky cocktail party that two of his former students-turned-murderer's are hosting for the parents and friends of their dead victim who's neatly tucked away in a chest posing as a banquet table. The acting by all is a true testament to theatrical polish as everyone had to be one their game to become Hitch's pawns in this ultra dark comedy of morality versus man. Watch closely for all the shrewd "segues" as the plots surges to a dramatic finale!
