This thoroughly realized film adaptation of Jean Anouhille's herculean stage play of the same name boasts some of the finest high caliber casting coups that truly paid off as both Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole give staggeringly effective performances in this historical drama pitting King Henry II against his longtime friend turned enemy Thomas Becket. Sumptuous color photography and rich use of on location shooting in England give this one a regal flair and panache that few other films of the 1960s can claim. Terrific supporting cast includes the incomparable Sir John Gielgud doing a very fey turn as the French Duke who gives Becket sanctuary after his escape from Henry's wrath. Superlative script and score only add to the vintage magnificence of this cinematic gem!
