Storyline:
Lawrence Wetherhold is miserable and misanthropic: he's a widower, a pompous professor at Carnegie Mellon, an indifferent father to a college student and a high-school senior, and the reluctant brother of a ne'er-do-well who's come to town. A seizure and a fall send Lawrence to the emergency room where the physician, a former student of his, ends up going on a date with him. His daughter, Vanessa, lonely and friendless, who's been bonding with his brother, tries to sabotage dad and the doctor's relationship, but Lawrence is good at that without help. Is there any way these smart people can get a life? Can happiness be pursued beneath layers of irony?

I saw this one at Sundance and it's an extremely funny movie. Thomas Haden Church and Elllen Page have awesome timing and great chemistry. The writing is pitch perfect. Actually, the audience was pretty much laughing nonstop. Unless they were crying. There are also some pretty moving scenes, and the ending is surprising and pretty original. And say what you want about Sarah Jessica Parker, she's talented actor.

I was pleasantly surprised with my experience in watching the movie Smart People. I say this because I looked up reviews and they were 50/50 - split. You either loved it or hated it. I was on the 50 side of loving it. It was not a ground-breaking movie by any means, but it was also not a waste of my time or money either. The humor is dry and it is full of witty lines and quips. I especially enjoyed it becuase it gave a picture of real life without the fluff. Real people, warts and all. A look into a family that doesn't have it all together. And not just with each other as a family unit, but with themselves as a person. But their imperfections in a sense bring them together and this disfunctional group somehow functions. Nice movie, nice soundtrack, nice cast. So my 50 lies on the positive side. I recommend it.

I caught this movie at a preview, and it's a must see ... Thomas Haden Church is hysterical ... Dennis Quaid and SJP have great on-screen chemistry ... and Ellen Page nails the role of a stick-in-the-mud teenager.
See it. You won't be sorry.

and a bit bland
ellen page managed to make a young republican, over-achiever
funny, but the dialog was POOP compared with diablo cody's
genius in juno.

Smart People is a cranky movie with dialogue meant to go over your head. Excellent self-absorbed acting by the main cast with complementary roles from the remainder. Quaid, Page and Church were phenomenal! It is extremely sarcastic and too smart at times, but has a meaningful storyline. This film helps you realize to "stop being miserable and accept things the way they are".
