Matthew was born in Shropshire but moved around the UK for most of his childhood before settling in London to train at Drama school. He went to Rose Bruford college to follow in the footsteps of one of his most admired actors, Gary Oldman. Although a trained actor, Matthew has been writing and directing films since the age of 14, when he first film 'Poltergeist House' won best film at a local film festival in Manchester. Most recently he set up Fizz and Ginger Films with Tori Hart (now his fiancé) and they have gone on to produce various award winning shorts including the classic E'gad, Zombies!, the template for feature film The Curse of The Buxom Strumpet. Acting has always been in the family with a great Aunt, Molly Quinn, training at RADA before becoming a poet in Ireland. Matthew has two younger brothers, Graham Butler, also an actor, and Dominic Butler, a writer. Their father, Patrick Butler, was a keen amateur actor, but sadly died at the age of 43.
