Based on the true story of Jean-Dominic Bauby, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly wonderfully captures the essence of Bauby's memoir. Although there are moments of bitterness it's Bauby's imagination that ultimately sets him free. In the end, his story is one of triumph, will power, and beauty. Visually, the movie is beautiful & arresting. The opening scenes are brilliant and inventive and allows the viewer to experience "locked in syndrome." The use of light, color, shadows and blur all add to the effect. This film is one of the most creative as far as cinematography and editing. Kudos to director, Julian Schnabel, his cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski, and film editor, Juliette Welfling for stepping outside the box. The performance are wonderful and it is difficult not to be stirred by them. Max von Sydow, as Bauby's father, gives a heartbreaking performance that will stay with you for a long time. Don't let the subject matter scare you away. This is a very inspirational film.

I can't even put it into words. My husband was still thinking about the movie when we got home. I thought the man was brilliant his eye was his beholder.

Some might find it sad. I found it oddly uplifting, thanks to the final photographic sequence while the credits rolled.
Not your typical Hollywood fare, in all the right ways.

This movie is one of the most marvelous movies I have ever seen. In addition to the story being so incredible that it needed to be told, the cinematography is amazing and deserving of an Oscar. The movie was beautifully acted and wondefully expressed.

In the way the French love to this movie was laden with metaphors - some very obvious, some open for discussion. I didn't find it quite as dark/depressing as some seemed to. Just another friendly reminder that life is precious and time is ticking. I agree with others that the cinematography truly captured his isolation. If you don't like French movies this will likely drive you nuts. If you're able to allow the experience to take over - give it a shot. Enjoy!
