Storyline:
The movie is based on Ntozake Shange's play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." Unlike the original play which featured only 7 women known by colors performing the collection of 20 poems, the movie has given each of the 20 characters names. Each of the poems deal with intense issues that particularly impact women in a thought-provoking commentary on what it means to be a female of color in the world.

The movie is an adaptation of Ntozoke Shange's play " For colored girls who have considered suicide when rainbow is enuf" . Poetry, dance and music are being blended beautifully in to the movie, taking us in to the characters' tormented disposition much faster than the limited tools of filmmaking. Acting is great. Characters are revealing powerful insides that can be useful to understand ourselves better. I usually don't like Tyler Perry's directing style or his movies but this movie is exceptionally good. There is something for everybody to pick up and chew it a little bit. Like the Kimberly Elise's character says at the end of the movie, maybe we can find God in us with the tears we shed.

I feel that every race of women need to see this movie. It is Tyler Perry's best movie. Although the title is: "For Colored Girls" it will touch all women of all races and religions. As a black woman, who was a social worker for over 20 years, I thought I knew what it is to be a woman. I was amazed of how much I did not know and pushed that what you see on the outside is not what is going on inside. The women must take the men in their lives to see these movie as well. They will see and understand that although men use women as a sounding board or "mama", the movie will show them how the pressure women feel to make them feel better. This movie should be shared with mothers and daughters. Daughters will have a better understanding of their sex and the trials and tribulations of being a woman no matter what race you are.

One of the actresses in this film is going to be placing a Golden Statue on her mantel, this February. If not Tyler Perry, himself, in becoming the first African American to win Best Picture. Last year the award was given to "The Hurt Locker." But, it seems to me if the Academy's highest honor can be given to a movie about a war, thousands of miles away, it can also be given to a film about the physical and emotional battles going on, right in our own neighborhoods. "For Colored Girls" isn't in my typical genre of choosing. I am more drawn to horror films, filled with their Hollywood monsters. But, to me, there is nothing more frightening than a story about the, very real, "monsters" we call friends, and allow into our homes. Or, the ones we fall asleep beside, each and every night.

I just saw the movie and my heart still feels heavy. I'm in my senior years and I remember when the book was first published. I also saw the play. Tyler Perry did an excellant job bringing the words to life. Each female actress gave a splended performance and were perfectly casted to match their character. Thanks to all for blessing us with this wonderful work of art. I did a lot of crying, but when Loretta Devine recited "someone stole my stuff" my heart was lifted as I laughed in agreement. The message of the movie is tough, but everyone women, young old, no matter what the race or ethnicity should see it. We all are reminded of who we are as woment and most of all that we survive. Our strength is in our spirit which is given by God. Men need to listen closely as they watch, they will see the deep soul that women have and hopefuly love us better.
