Storyline:
"The Way" is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn't plan on is the profound impact the journey will have on him and his "California Bubble Life". Inexperienced as a trekker, Tom soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. On his journey, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, each with their own issues and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen), a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt), who is suffering from a bout of writer's block. From the unexpected and, often times, amusing experiences along the way, this unlikely quartet of misfits creates an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again. Through Tom's unresolved relationship with his son, he discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose".

I liked the film very much. I thought it was very well acted and directed. I would have liked to know a little more of the background of the main characters, but there wasn't anything lost by not having that information. The movie is good for everyone except children. I doubt they would have understanding of most of the movie. I highly recommend this movie. It is a heartwarming tale of self-discovery.

Having expeirienced the hike on Camino Frances in May/June, 2011, we were eager to see this film. The scenery and the sounds brought back so many memories. It was fun remembering the places we too had walked. The story line was very believable, because we passed many memorials for fallen Pilfrims along the way. On our hike this past spring 2 people met their demise in fact. Yes, its true you do meet up with others and begin to walk with them, but rarely do you stick with the same people for the entire 500 miles. Mostly due to different walking speeds, or injuries incurred along the way to the feet and legs - but the movie didn't expand on these temporal things. For me the walk was all about giving up all control and surrendering to God. And God came through and met our every need. I personally saw that God lead this unlikely group to their destination, for each of them, a different reason. The movie kept your interest, and the actors were all very well place. I recommend it!

The story, direction and acting are perfect. After most movies it is easy to critique and pose alternative choices for the production. This time no suggestions. It is obviously a sincere and personal story between father and son both on screen and behind the camera. A truly moving experience on many levels. It is easy to forget that a script was involved as the writing and performances are so natural and honest. This is not a big Hollywood production with a wide release so you will need to look for a cinema showing it. ?You don?t choose a life, you live it.? Have you seen ?The Way?? When you do, you will.

It was close to my heart, because I walked 100 miles on the Camino back in 2004. The movie captured the essence of what individuals carry with them, and not everyone knows "why" when they walk the Camino. The journey into the town of Santiago, the certificate for walking and collecting the stamps along the way on the pilgrim's passport and the pilgrim's mass was an excellent representation of what it was like. Brought back great memories. The dialogue between characters was excellent! Everything about this movie was very authentic. Will definitely see it again!

Well acted (Martin Sheen is briliiant in a very difficult role), phenomenal tale/script/dialogue and without being didactic, it has a great message. Go see and enjoy.
