I love this new version of Jane Eyre, and have now seen it twice. The director, Cary Fukananga is young, and known for his indie film Sin Nombre which got great reviews at Sundance. The principal actors were excellent, including the child actress who played the young Jane Eyre. They toned down Rochester's Byronic posturing and emo-ness, and made him more gallant and slightly less violent. Jane is depicted in a more feminist manner than the book. While Jane and Rochester aren't plain and ugly as specified in the book, in BBC-style fashion they looked more like real peoplet. I didn't like Jamie Bell as St. John Rivers, but that was my biggest problem. It was fun to see Judi Dench as the housekeeper. Rochester is still an "irritable ****," as a reviewer put it, but in the film I finally found him compelling as a romantic hero. Although I admit it's partly because Michael Fassbender is hot. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, withpre-Raphaelite-influenced imagery.
