Storyline:
Tokyo is a city of transitions in three short films. A young woman who finds her life useless experiences a metamorphosis. A disheveled Caucasian emerges from a manhole to face arrest, trial, and execution; he calls himself "Merde" and speaks a language only his look-alike attorney understands. Is he human? A recluse experiences human contact when a pizza-delivery girl faints at his door during an earthquake. He conquers fear to seek her out. A chair, a corpse, a hermit: sources of urban connection?

The 3 directors all have their own unique styles and outlooks on the city of Tokyo!. This film has very in depth and has a lot of intriguing statements being made about Tokyo's society as whole. I urge any who enjoy good art, philosophy, and culture at its finest with a few comical scenes especially in "*****" in the 2nd act. THERE IS A SCREENING COMING UP ON 4/10 IN CAMBRIDGE, MA AT KENDALL SQUARE CINEMA. CHECK IT OUT

This movie was so intriguing to watch. I've only seen one Michel Gondry film before, and I had not heard of the other 2 directors before, but I love the idea of 3 directors working on one movie. You get 3 different stories for the price of 1, and everyone will have their favorite piece. Each director comments on the city of Tokyo and how they visualize it. From terrorizing sewer men to earthquakes to strange chairs, this movie seems to have everything and it stands out as the most unique movie I've ever seen.

Three short films with a common thread--Tokyo! explores the social impact of the giant megalopolis for which it is named. Directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, and Joon-ho bong combine forces, contributing stories that will transform your concept of civilization. Gondry's "Interior Design" centers on a young woman searching for her purpose in the cramped and fast-paced urbanity which envelops her. Carax's "*****" explores our tolerance for the grotesque, as it follows the wake of a mysterious green villian and the disaster he leaves wherever he goes. Joon-ho's "Shaking Tokyo" depicts a hermit's relationship with his only outside human contact, a pizza delivery girl. Combined, these three distinct stories each present us with a unique fantasy, yet all echo a common theme.

Tokyo! is an omnibus feature that brings together three of today's most vibrant directors for three enthralling stories that encompass one city. Each non-Japanese director brings his own style to the screen to present a foreigner's view of the largest city on earth, and in doing so provide us with a cinematic treat. This visually stunning film addresses the timeless question of whether we shape cities, or if cities shape us. I saw it at the Miami Film Festival and absolutely loved it, I can't wait till it comes out on DVD June 30th.

Three original tales tied together by a singular cityscape, "Tokyo!" really is an amazingly beautiful look into not only human nature but also the capacity to find magic in the mundane. The three foreign directors manage to tell their tales in such a way that cultural borders are broken, allowing the simplicity of their storytelling to shine through. The characters range from charming to terrifying, amicable to devious. Whether watching a young couple navigate the rigors of city life or witnessing the monstrous Mr. ***** "ravage" the city, you're always watching three dimensional characters as opposed to cardboard cutouts filmmakers seem to be using more and more these days. Watching Tokyo! was a surrealistic and highly visceral experience that i can't wait to sit through it again. Here's hoping the reports of a June 30th DVD release are to be believed. Check out Tokyo! as soon as you get the chance, because you will never look at the city the same way again.
