Storyline:
Dominated by her possessive mother and her bullying consort, Conroy, since childhood, teen-aged Victoria refuses to allow them the power of acting as her regent in the last days of her uncle, William IV's rule. Her German cousin Albert is encouraged to court her for solely political motives but, following her accession at age eighteen, finds he is falling for her and is dismayed at her reliance on trusty Prime Minister Melbourne. Victoria is impressed by Albert's philanthropy which is akin to her own desire to help her subjects. However her loyalty to Melbourne, perceived as a self-seeker, almost causes a constitutional crisis and it is Albert who helps restore her self-confidence. She proposes and they marry, Albert proving himself not only a devoted spouse, prepared to take an assassin's bullet for her, but an agent of much-needed reform, finally endorsed by an admiring Melbourne.

Wow, what a terrific film and entertaining to boot. What an incredibly romantic story about two of Great Britain's Monarchs who actually feel in love and remained so until Prince Albert death. The cast, especially Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend are outstanding. The both just about burn up the screen with burgeoning love. But what I really enjoyed the most about the film is that it is very near to truth of what actually happened. That made me very happy after the two recent Queen Elizabeth movies starring Cate Blanchett that were all over the map with the real story, mixing characters and making up fictious events and combining characters, something most historical films do not need. The real life stories of the countless monarchs, presidents, dictators, etc. who've ruled the world don't need Hollywood to add or change the real story. Definitely thumbs up, a must see for all!

She sweeps you away, with her graceful strength. By believing in love and truth in a world where aristocracy is calculatingly and cold, the young Victoria brings you to simple joys. This film makes me believe all the more in the beauty of courage and what it can create. Leaving the theater in silence, I was peacefully swept away in the grandeur of the period's depiction. Beautiful.

I saw this movie Christmas day, and loved it! I thought all the actors gave great performances, and were very convincing; I was very anxious for Victoria to become 18 and be able to stand on her own, and I fell in love with Victoria and Albert falling in love. I loved the scene, where they quarreled, and she tried to assert herself as Queen as if she were suggesting he was a mere stud-service, and he ignored her! Great movie! It will become part of my DVD library.

The Young Victoria was actually released in theaters throughout the United Kingdom in March, so the DVD is already out. Like most period pieces, The Young Victoria does include half fact and half fiction, probably to make the movie a little more interesting. If you are familiar with the movie starring Kiera Knightly called The Duchess, you will find that a movie about a woman who managed to become Queen at the young age of eighteen is far more interesting than a movie about a woman that was seen as fashionable two hundred years ago. Although the love story between Victoria and Albert is kept mostly true, there are only two historical facts that are blatantly false. The way Victoria's relatives and everyone else acted around her is kept the same, as politicians try to push their agenda onto a girl that knows little about the world as her mother has kept her shielded most of her life. As Victoria explains earlier in the film (voice of Emily Blunt) she was unaware that she was different.
