After a car crash, Jamie, 30, comes to, locked in a room at a factory. Her son, a diabetic, is missing. A man wearing a ski mask comes into the room and tells her that she must help him find her husband who has stolen millions from his boss. He says her husband is a killer and a drug trafficker. Jamie is certain it's a mistake. Her captor insists she help him or lose her son. He brings her audio tapes made in their apartment demanding she figure out how her husband was communicating with an accomplice. She has only 12 hours before she and her son will die. Piper moves to Santa Cruz, California to go to the Institute of Art. When she was 15 she gave birth to a daughter, but had to put her up for adoption because she was too young to raise her. Years later she sees an article about a girl she thinks is her daughter, who lives in Santa Cruz, and applies for a job in a sandwich shop. As she works there she gets to know the staff. As the two men begin to form a close bond news of a police manhunt sets them both on edge driving their fragile relationship to a tragic conclusion.

On a journey to San Francisco, Richard, his father and cousin Emmeline find themselves on a ship about to explode. Paddy, Richard and Emmeline find themselves with no food and no water stuck in the middle of nowhere. The fishing vessel Solita crosses a storm during the night and the Skipper Will McKenna witnesses a weird creature attacking the crewman Joey. The fish population is reducing in the area and the biologist Arden is investigating the possible causes.
