Prior to becoming an Actor/Writer; Darren spent 17 years in Australia's armed forces, both as a junior sailor in the Royal Australian Navy before becoming an Officer of the Royal Australian Air Force. During his time in the Navy he worked as an Indonesian Language interpreter. For many years (and still to this day) Darren writes under the pseudonym "The Larrikin Laird" as for many years while working in sensitive areas of the military, wanted to separate his writing from his work. Examples of his work are also sometimes found under a similar title "Larry Kinlaird". In 2005, Darren alongside blues musician Mack T Hastings hosted a radio program in Canberra, Australia titled "Older Than Dirt". The show was so named as both men jokingly believed that the only real way either of them could legitimately have the blues was if they grew to be very old, and started worrying about pending death. Darren met his wife Tova in 2003 when undertaking dance training. The pair then went on to teach dancing together and still do to present day.
