His father Ricardo Fong-Torres (born Fong Kwok Seung) had to change his surname to Torres and pose as a Filipino citizen to be able to enter the United States. At the time Chinese immigration was restricted by the Exclusion Act. The family later adopted a hyphenated surname, Fong-Torres.
