Michael Kirk graduated from the University of Idaho in 1971 with a degree in Journalism, and began his career as a documentary writer, producer, and director at the university's award -winning public television station, KUID-TV, until 1977. Kirk worked in a similar capacity at the PBS affiliate in Seattle from 1977-1979 before becoming a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard in 1979. He helped to create the PBS documentary series Frontline and was Frontline's senior producer from 1983 to 1987. He now runs The Kirk Documentary Group, and over the years has produced more than 100 national television programs and documentaries. The Michael Kirk Award in Broadcast News is award ed every spring to the outstanding senior in the field at The School of Journalism and Mass Media at the University of Idaho. In 2000, he was named to the University of Idaho Hall of Fame.
